Animals Drop Meat
Animals are made of meat - so they should drop meat!
I always considered it immersion breaking that some animals, for instance sheep, doesn't drop any meat, and being reminded of this every time you kill one of the "non-meat" animals can quickly become quite annoying. After all they are not exactly rare...
For this reason I created this basic plugin for myself - and decided to share it.
What it does
It makes Minecrafts "meat-less" animals like horse, sheep, squid etc... drop meat! *
*Depending on what version you choose to download drop-rates, meat names and meat types can be configured!
Check out the Meats page for a list of all new meats!

Animals Drop Meat is very focused and easy to use - no unnecessary extras added - only 100% meat!
Its high configurability is implemented as simple as possible to guarantee zero hassle, zero compatibility issues and perfect performance.
Q: Why doesn't the dropped meats have different icons/textures from the vanilla meats?
A: Adding new materials is unfortunately not possible with (current) vanilla clients.
Q: Will AnimalsDropMeat work with version X of minecraft?
A: All versions of Animals Drop Meat work with almost any version of Minecraft! :)
... Official support is for 1.6.4 - 1.7.9 but it should work on older/newer versions too!
Q: How do I configure the drop-rates in the config?
A: The chance for a specific Qty (quantity) to drop is its Rate / Sum of all Rates.
... Click here for a longer explanation including an example.
What version to choose?
All versions are safe to use - It's simply a choice of how many features you want!
(If you don't want the auto-update or any customization options you can safely stay on v1.0!)
For details about the different version see the Versions page!
I recommend skimming through the versions page at least once since it provides basic explanations for all important features and config settings !!
Note: This plugin uses Hidendras MCStats Metrics Lite, see link below to view the stats.
It also uses PluginUpdater to check for updates on the bukkit servers ("CheckForUpdates: true/false").

Thanks for the info!
We used to use NewMeat, and I loved the feature where you can add and configure any mob you wanted and assign what kind of meat they dropped, it's name, and the range of how many they dropped. Is this something we might see in the future with this plugin?
@WilliamtheChad
Last time I checked out 1.7.2 (for another one of my plugins) I wasn't able to finish updating it because some of the bukkit code where not written yet (asked on bukkit irc and a developer said he was still working on it). So I have put aside updating my plugins, I'm waiting for the beta release, because writing complicated workaround code for the missing parts in bukkit api (that is on its way) seems like a lot of effort for something that 1) wont be needed as soon as the bukkit code is complete, and 2) might break on any update. (If it takes a veeery long time I might look at a dev build again.)
But to answer your question: Monitoring the usage stats from mcstats I saw a trend that started a while ago where the percentage of 1.7.2 servers using this plugin started dropping (from ~60% to ~33%). However... nobody has actually reported an issue... I would be happy if they did. (So maybe there is no issue and the drop in 1.7.2 servers is a coincidence?)
Going to do a quick test with latest dev build (#2959). Will edit this post soon with my findings.
Edit - Results: Everything seems to be working.
(Tested: killing all animals / killing them with fire, and cooking raw meat.)
I guess the drop in 1.7.2 servers was a coincidence ...or maybe some of them switched back to 1.6.4?
this work with 1.7?
My bad but...
Forgot to add the custom smelting (cooking) behavior in v1.4
(Only killing animals on fire will drop custom cooked meats in v1.4)
Uploaded v1.5 with the custom cooking added.
Celebrating +1000 total downloads for all my plugins!
Thanks everyone!
^^
@rmh4209
Ok, thanks!
@FlOppythp
Currently eating breakfast and fixing it!
Should be completed soon and approved within a day or so.
Edit1: Code probably finished - testing new config loading/saving fault robustness.
Edit2: v1.4 completed! Uploaded and awaiting approval.
Tip: If anyone preferred the old behavior (where the animals drop "vanilla" meat that stacks with other "vanilla" meat) just set the new custom names to empty strings and it will drop unchanged meat stacks just like in the older versions.
Like this:
NameRaw: ""
@AnorZaken
All he's asking for is the ability to set the name of items that are dropped. It'd be really easy to do that, all you need to use is Bukkit's ItemMeta class, no need to use NBT or anything.
@FlOppythp
Thanks. I would like new meats too. Hopefully I will add them in mc 1.7
(Note: The faq-section consists of exactly 1 question: the one you asked. Please read the plugin description before you ask questions.)
(Technically it is sort of possible pre 1.7 but requires a lot of work and manipulating the nbt data directly - totally not "simple and reliable" - totally not fit for the scope of this plugin!)
@LHammonds
It was easy to add the feature you requested. From the change log:
v1.3 - [kill it with fire!]
- PS: In vanilla minecraft one-shot killing an animal with a fire weapon will drop raw meat.
...It has to be on fire before it dies! My plugin behaves just the same.
It has been submitted for approval. Expect it to be downloadable within the coming days.
@LHammonds
Currently death cause is not taken into account (fire).
Also you currently cant change what they drop, only the amount.
Basically I'm trying to keep the plugin light-weight and simple... :P
However it's quite possible I will go down the path of releasing different version to choose from, I've already started down that path anyway. (In other words I might gradually add features that people request unless I find it adds too much complexity.)
The ability to configure amount is in v1.2, but you can grab v1.1 and it will notify you when v1.2 has been approved (and download it for you if you want).
Thanks for creating and sharing this plugin. I started using OtherDrops for this very reason but because one could do so much with it, I started implementing the other features but it is one of the more costly plugins to run and development for it seems to have dissipated.
I might just drop (pun intended) that plugin in favor of this one. I'll have to test it out and see (glad you added ability to tweak it via config)
EDIT: Will it dropped cooked versions of the meat if animal dies by fire-enchanted weapon?
Thanks,
LHammonds
v1.2 is finished. Awaiting approval...
Edit: Under review
@FlOppythp
A cow drops 1-3 beef, eating 1 beef doesn't even fill half your belly.
=>
Eating two whole cows isn't guaranteed fill your stomach!Point: It is balanced in terms of other game mechanics. It's not meant to be 100% realistic.
Bottom line:
There is no need to be rude. If you read the description I've already provided a link to a much more advanced plugin which can do what you want and more - at the cost of a much more complicated configuration and higher code complexity = more setup work required and higher risk of conflicts and breakage on upgrading. The "selling point" of this plugin is exactly it's simplicity: Zero effort, High reliability.
Regardless...
The v1.0 version of the plugin does already fill this role and is the completely config-less version. But v1.1 already has a config anyway because all plugins are required to have the option to turn off auto-updating. So I will make v1.2 support configuring the drop amount since it will not affect reliability. This is a small change so expect it to be out soon.
You can spend the time in waiting to learn some manners. Because you where too lazy to think or lacked the ability to figure out why the drop-rates are low is no excuse for aggressive behavior against peers. I have an education - do you have a mom?
No update needed for 1.6.4.
