PowerGrid
What is it?
PowerGrid is a plugin that was created to enable the creation of large fields of pistons. The original purpose was the creation of a bridge that can be lowered into or raised out of water and lava using redstone power but since creating it I have found other uses. For instance, since it will place powered redstone torches on any exposed face of the grid blocks, including the sides, you can make traps with large sections of the walls smashing in from either side:
...you can also transfer power vertically MUCH more easily than with redstone poweder. Just make a tower of grid blocks (up, down, diagonal... whatever) and it will transmit the power from your switch to the desired location. No need for spiraling staircases or repeaters!:
Setup
There are only three settings in the config.yml:
GridOffColor: WHITE
GridOnColor: YELLOW
MaxGridSize: 1000
The GridOffColor is the color of Wool that is used for the grid in it's "off state", where no power is being transmitted (the default is WHITE). When the grid enters this state, all torches are removed from all exposed block faces of all grid blocks (except the initial block).
The GridOnColor is the color of Wool that is used for the grid in it's "on state", where power is being transmitted (the default is YELLOW). When the grid enters this state, a powered redstone torch is added to all exposed block faces of all grid blocks (again, except the initial one).
The MaxGridSize setting is there for the protection of your server. It will prevent the plugin from adding torches to more than 1,000 blocks at a time. It's a setting so you can change it if you want to make structures that are larger than 1,000 blocks.
Someone remake this, only instead of switching to a yellow block, and placing redstone torches... skip the torch part and make it replace the blocks with redstone blocks!
Please bring this back... I miss this plugin, so much.
@enigma617
You're awesome it does work for 1.2.5 and its freaking cool :)
It's too bad this was apparently abandoned. Do you have any plans to expand on the original or will it end at the updated clone ?
A few things I've noted so far that could use some reworking and expansion. Sometimes not all of the torches that appear disappear after the power is removed thereby creating some item duping, albeit limited to redstone torches. If you link two grids together then activate one you create an infinite power supply and it seems to twitch/flicker every now and then so its not stable, even using repeaters to create directional flow doesn't allow these to turn off. You just gotta hack them apart :) Also it would be nice to have some permission node to limit which groups can use this.
All that aside thanks for tossing out the link to this it's very fun to play with :)
@Forecaster71
I just whipped this up. I gave a shot at a clone. Let me know what you think. (It's compiled under 1.2.5-R1.2)
here it is: Download
Ya, I would like to see an update for this one too. It looks really useful but not so much if it's outdated :)
It's a shame that he hasn't published the code...
Maybe someone else can build a similar plugin...
Deffinatly need an update for 1.2, such a useful plugin. Doesnt look good sicne last update and comment are in Oct/nov last year!
/cry
@Forecaster71
I'm in the same boat as you. Really could use a plugin like this and can't seem to find anything else...
This has stopped working with 1.2! I really like this plugin and what it does! Will there be an update for 1.2 eventually?
@OnoTadaki
Thanks OnoTadaki. Yes, that is *exactly* what I want to eventually do, but right now... I don't think it's possible with the current APIs. I will keep trying to figure it out though :)
I absolutely love the concept of this mod! Minecraft has needed a powered block-relay for a while and it's absence has really hampered a lot of my build ideas.
At it's current state, it's not possible to roll this out on a non-creative server because the torches are easily farmed. I created a simple machine in a few seconds using pistons that spits out several thousand torches per minute.
I do not know if it is within the realm of where you see this plugin going or at all possible given the current coding environment, but I would love to see this modified so that a powered wool block transmits it's powered state to any adjacent wool block, and leave the redstone torches out altogether.
Thanks again! Great idea.
@Heccubus
Nevermind... I already changed it to wool. I like that better anyway. It will just change the color of the wool instead of changing the block type. Hopefully that is worthless enough to not be a problem.
I will upload the latest build, with this change, once I have finished testing it. I will also update all the instructions, screenshots, videos, etc.
@caidcurse
What if I was to make the grid use wool instead. And have different colors of wool represent the on and off states instead of different block types? Would that be better?
@caidcurse
Yeah, I figured that was going to be a bit of a problem. Let me see what I can work out without making things too complex. I guess I will have to make grid blocks unbreakable as a rule and add a permission to manage who can break them. Is that sorta what you are looking for?
I am worried about making it so that you cannot break gridblocks in the world even if they are not part of a grid.
Can you make it so the mod doesn't give people gold blocks when they break the activated grid?
@colony88
Wow, have a great trip! You are very welcome for the update, I hope it works well for you.
@Heccubus
Cannot test right now, leaving for Rome tomorrow on school trip, I'll test it afterwards! Thanks for the update!
@colony88
Thanks, let me know how it works for you. I have already updated it for 1317 and am waiting for the latest build to be approved by the great and wise BukkitDev moderators.
Defininetely going to us this! Thanks a lot, but could you please update it for 1317?
