MCGDB
MCGDB is a self correcting, automatic player reputation system for Minecraft servers. Our system allows servers to collect and report player statistics which are cross-referenced with data collected from other servers to determine a reputation for any player in the context of any given server.
This system is unique in that it does not assume that there is one standard for good behaviour across all servers, meaning a player known to have a bad reputation on one server may have a good reputation on another, and in fact a positive reputation on one server may reflect negatively on a player's reputation on another server. In addition, the system is self-correcting. While similar reputation systems are forced to provide appeal systems in case of abuse on the part of server owners, it is impossible for a single server (or group of servers) to ensure that any given user has a negative reputation in all situations in MCGDB's system.
Servers can use the reputation values reported for players to implement access controls, such as automatically blacklisting players with poor reputations, but it is possible to execute arbitrary actions in response to reputation values, so server owners are not limited to what the MCGDB plugin provides for actions.
In order to use the system, server owners must install the plugin on their server, then register the server with the MCGDB database system, at mcgdb.net.
The project is currently in a limited testing phase, but we are looking for server administrators who are willing to run our plugin to let us collect statistics so we can refine our algorithms.

It's something of a combination of the two. Players may collect both explicit and implicit ratings, which are used to determine a composite trustworthiness factor. The calculated trustworthiness factor can be used, among other things, to prevent poorly-rated players from joining a server (as configured by the server owner).
Compared to mcbans (when used in such a fashion), a major difference is that we assume people may change their behavior, so reputation values decay back toward a neutral 0 over time- it is impossible for a player to be permanently blacklisted (although a negative enough reputation would take a very long time to decay back to reasonable levels). It's reasonable that server owners might want to have a permanent black- or whitelist, so we plan to include server-specific override functionality to supplement the rating system.
