Want to check if mobs can spawn in your house ? don't turn of your nice shaders, just use this plugin.
Client side mods do work better and have a better performance, but this mod works for every player.
Most servers do use holoapi anyway, so why not extend it :D
Features
Show light level above one block by left-clicking with a torch
Show light level above an area by command ("easylightlevel showarea")
Change how the info is shown
Installation
Required Plugin:
HoloAPI
Drop jar into plugins folder after installing HoloAPI
Commands
/easylightlevel showarea
Shows the info in a configurable area
/easylightlevel infotype <number>
Sets the style of info shown for the player, needs permission "easylightlevel.show"
Style numbers:
0: Number
1: Text (Safe, Unsafe)
2: Number: + Text
3: Text: + Number
4: Change clicked block (emerald and redstone) (buggy)
5: Change clicked block (red and green wool) (buggy)
Config
left_click_item: 50
Set the item id for the "wand"
show_area_radius: 4
How far the area command will show light levels
show_area_height: 2
The height to check for light levels
show_hologram_seconds: 2
How long the hologram will stay when using the wand
show_area_hologram_seconds: 4
How long the holograms will stay when using the command (area)
Permissions
"easylightlevel.area"
Permission for command "showarea"
"easylightlevel.show"
Permission to use leftclick with torch

I probably won't do anything with my plugins until we know if bukkit will stay and update. I am currently only playing forge if anything.
I wish this was written for Holographic Displays, since that supports the Spigot 1.8 ProtocolLib hack :)

Jep its a bug with holoapi. Its supposed to NOT save all the holograms, but it does it anyway, taking ALOT of server resources and even crashing it. When it crashes, created holograms stay because my plugin does not know them anymore.
Thats why showarea has a radius and permission so only selected members can use it whisely.
Bug report (likely a HoloAPI bug): Tried stress testing the plugin. This happened (notice the 2991 entities): http://i.imgur.com/qhvDDAl.png
All the holo entities ended up crashing the server. Fair enough, I can just use a cooldown plugin on the command or lower the showarea value.
However, I found that the holograms won't go away - even on a complete server restart. They are set to disappear after four seconds. And there does not seem to be a command for HoloAPI to remove all holograms, so I am currently removing them one by one, manually :/
UPDATE: Workaround: Delete and recreate "data.yml". Slightly faster than removing 3000 holograms manually :P

Jep, thats why I wrote buggy :) The event that gets player interaction should first check if the block is switched already and switch it back or something. Will fix that soon I think.
I will probably have to check if holoapi is installed too, will probably throw some errors in current state. But only if you do not install holoapi.
Bug report: In mode 4 & 5 if you double click a block with a torch, it either converts it into redstone blocks or red wool and doesn't change back.
Updated Version is uploaded, waiting to be approved.
I will add a setting to disable the block change info next version.

Jep, that number thing would have been my second addition to the plugin. I think even just numbers would be enough (with green or red for spawning identifier)
Sorry for spelling, it was a 15 minutes speed "challange", kind of made my head boiling :D (And it was late) :D

Great idea. But please fix the spelling issue if it is going to be the main feature of your plugin.
Another addition you could add would be to have different display modes. A different mode you could have would show the light level as a number above the block, and depending on the color of the number would represent when mobs could spawn.

I believe the correct spelling would be "safe" or "unsafe".
