Trails
WHAT IS IT?
Trails is a great RPG plugin that works on the premise that, in the real world, walking wears down trails and paths from dirt to stone, eventually. Trails aims to add this element to Minecraft by automatically creating trails, paths, and roads based on the use of a trail. The trail contents and wear passes are fully configurable, unlocking the possibilities for a number of different trails or uses on your server.
The plugin even has Towny support to add extra control over where paths can form!
(Example Use)
METRICS
This plugin utilises Hidendra's plugin metrics system, which means that the following information is collected and sent to mcstats.org:
- A unique identifier
- The server's version of Java
- Whether the server is in offline or online mode
- The plugin's version
- The server's version
- The OS version/name and architecture
- The core count for the CPU
- The number of players online
- The Metrics version
- Opting out of this service can be done by editing plugins/Plugin Metrics/config.yml and changing opt-out to true.
Metrics help me as a developer continue to add support for the versions my users are running and help me gague the use of the plugin.
CONFIG
Beta version 0.5 will contain custom block support. At the moment, the only hierarchy is grass > dirt > gravel > stonebrick, and sand > sandstone > redsand. More info will be posted about it later!
PERMS & COMMANDS
The plugin comes with one command,
- /trails <on/off>
- Perm: trails.off
An alias for trails is paths
IF YOU WANT TO CONNECT THE PLUGIN TO TOWNY, DO THE FOLLOWING
In the config, change HookTowny: to true. This will set trails to only form in the wilderness.

@ccrama
That would allow you to avoid hooking into every single permission plugin out there. Just create a block break event, and see if its allowed/cancelled.
@Zacky1
That's a good point, that should have shipped with .5 :o. I'll add that in.
@TempusVulpi
Isn't that what Towny is for? @ccrama does the plugin work with block place/break event? (ex: If the event is cancelled, don't create the path?)
@Fairawen
Towny helped me implement this and I'll let them know of this issue.
@Zacky1
Thats how the plugin works already. The only reason you have to do /paths on is if you have previously turned it off. It auto turns it on when you log back in, though.
@Zacky1
I disagree with that idea, there may be some places you dont want a path..
Recommendation:
Instead of forcing a player to type /trails on, it should be done automatically. Everytime you step on a grass block, the metadata is updated +1 and calculate if the metadata has reached x. If it has, upgrade the block...
That way paths aren't created consciously, they just 'happen'
@ccrama
Hm... not certain why, but trails are still appearing in towns, despite the Towny hook set to true. As far as I can tell, all I changed was the hook line fron "false" to "true". Here's a pastebin of my config: http://pastebin.com/ZU9JgfuQ
Edited to add: Discovered that I don't auto-create paths on land that *I* own. My own town I don't make a trail. On other people's towns, however, I do. :P
If you need any other info to help you figure it out, let me know. :)
@ccrama
Awesome - I'll test it out now and let you know what happens. :) Thanks!
@Fairawen Thanks! You can get it here http://dev.bukkit.org/bukkit-plugins/trails/files/4-trails-0-5-beta-1-6-1-7/ while waiting approval.
Fantastic. I'm pumped about this. :D Great work and keep us updated! Keen to use this on my server, especially since it has such a friendly Towny hook.
@snakejawz
That will come out in the next version. I'll keep you guys updated!
i love this idea, will grass naturally regenerate if not walked on for a certain amount of time? i can see grass > dirt > gravel > mossy cobble > cobble > stone bricks being a thing
or like add the ability to have a decay number of days for the trail to revert?? like stone brick trails crumbling to cobble, then mossy, then eventually back to grass. based on a decay% per day.
the idea of having decay in minecraft would be great for server owners, like inactive chunks slowly reverting back to nature if people never visit them.
@Daunay
Not at the moment, but its a good idea. I'll put it in there for the next build!
Can we apply your mod only for ONE world in multiworld server ?
