Grief Prevention
AUTOMATICALLY PREVENTS ALL FORMS OF GRIEF, including build/break, theft, spam, fire, spawn camping, lava dumping, chat trolling, advertising and more, so you don't have to undo any damage after the fact. It even teaches players how to use it so you don't have to! No configuration or database required. Stop responding to grief and prevent it instead. Grief Prevention will solve your grief problems without requiring you to manage a roster of trained administrators, juggle 10 different anti-grief plugins, take away cool standard game features, publish a training manual / tutorial for players, or add explanatory signs to your world. You can also choose to integrate PvP elements into build design to finally get a PvP experience befitting a sandbox game about creative building.
Grief Prevention stops grief before it starts automatically without any effort from administrators, and with very little (self service) effort from players. Solve all your grief problems with a single download, no database, and no configuration step.

Please Vote for Grief Prevention
I've also posted Grief Prevention on the Spigot site, where plugins are ranked based on reviews. If you love GP, please take a couple of minutes to give GP your rating and leave a short review. Better rating and positive reviews will help server owners who look for plugins on the Spigot site make the safe choice (GP) instead of downloading something sketchy or incomplete. :) Thanks so much for all your support!

First beta release! Basic functionality seems stable, should effectively stop most grief directed at knowledgeable players who have access to a golden shovel. Newbie protection and claim sharing will come next, followed by spam prevention, tree fixes, PvP integration, and performance tuning (probably in that order).
One warning - file formats are still changing, so when you upgrade versions for testing, you'll want to delete your previous "GriefPreventionData" folder.
@ubuntu10
Sure. But before I add a config variable, how deep do you want it? I could just make your preference the default.
can there be a config for how deep a claim can go down in the ground
@Chrono7
Yep, I looked into Residence as well as many other existing plugins before I even announced this one. While residence has admittedly a few (in my opinion, low value) advanced features over what I'm planning, it's much more difficult to use, and as far as I can tell, doesn't effectively protect new players. Maybe if those guys added an automatic residence system to protect new players, that would help a lot. But even then, have you tried reading the docs for all those slash commands and config variables? It makes my head spin. My aim is to make it all work without any players having to run off to a website and read instructions.
I contend that you don't need a rollback feature if you prevent nearly all grief.
Yep, there are other plugins to stop fire spread, ban spammers, eliminate tree tops, etc. But I think I can do a better or equal job than all of them, combine it all seamlessly into one plugin, and make it work out of the box. Easy, effective.
Also, I don't see anyone else integrating PvP and area protection in a way that highlights build design.
If you'd like to discuss specific features you see in other plugins (like PreciousStones or Residence), please post again. :) I'm happy to chat about the details of my plans in those areas so we can debate over which features should be in GriefPrevention and which should not.
Thanks very much for the feedback!
@bigscary
Sounds like a cool plugin! However, I think that your main "claims" feature's biggest competitor is Residence, as it has variable size per residence, flags that owners can set, charging for residences at a per block rate, and an enormous number of configuration options. While the idea is great, it seems like you are trying to solve too many problems at once; There are several good spam-stopping plugins, several region protection plugins, ex WorldGuard, and you don't have plans to add a roll-back feature when someone doesn't use claim.
In closing, you do have simplicity and a long feature list on your side, but it will be hard to beat several specialized plugins with one plugin.
I still think that it's a great idea, and I can't wait to see how it turns out!
Cheers!
Hmm wow, still not approved. Approvers must be enjoying their holidays. :) Anyway, the build/theft protection is in! So when those approvers get around to approving, you can all test it out. It's most fun if you and a friend each build a hut and then try to grief each other, but...
To test by yourself, create a claim and a building inside the claim. Round up some farm animals if you can, too. And make part of your build wooden, so as to test grief by fire. Also include an iron door with a button and/or lever, and all the various contraptions (enchanting table, furnace, etc). Now use the golden shovel to create a claim including your entire build. Now stop the server and open the "GriefPrevention/ClaimsData" folder. You should see one file in there, which represents your one claim. Open it up and change the name inside the file from your name to some other name ("otherplayer" in my unimaginative case). Now save the file and restart the server. Have fun failing at grief!! :)
Be sure to test:
Any feedback on the current (limited) functionality is very much appreciated!! Just comment here. :) Thank you!
Edit: Looks like approval is still pending... so you'll have to wait a bit for the download to be available. :\
@iN94
Stay tuned. :) Expect an initial release with only the primary feature this weekend or early next week. I'll be adding more features gradually, probably releasing several times per week for several weeks.
Wow.. This plugin sounds cool! Can't wait for it to be release. :D
