Gods
The plugin for adding Gods to the world of minecraft.
A God is an entity that exist because a player has chosen to believe in it.
A player shows his faith in a god by building an altar for his god and using the altar to pray.
In this way, many gods may exist at a time, all with names created by the players.
The main purpose for believing in these Gods is to gain from the help the Gods provide (see below) and to provide some basic faction play based on ideology and culture (I.e. "My god is better than yours because apples are holy!").
Note that this does NOT mean that Gods are "free item dispensers": Gods will only bless players with items when they are pleased with the effort of their believers.
Gods will even punish a player for ignoring their divine wishes.
With Holy Lands, players can easily protect their lands from grief by simply building alters.
Another purpose is simply to get people inspired to build awesome churches for their Gods.
Check out what others have build for their God here
Altars
Building an altar is simple:
- Place a normal or redstone torch on a smooth brick block
- Place a sign on the side of the block with ONLY the name of your God written on any line
- Players can now pray to this God by right-clicking on the altar sign
If you place a normal torch, you specify a male God.
If you place a redstone torch, you specify a female God (Goddess).
Note that when building the first altar for a God, the altars position will be set as the "religion home" and believers can reach it with the /gods home command.
Rules
- Gods exist as long as players believe in them
- Gods comes into existence when players build altars to them
- Gods grow stronger from the number of believers they have
- Gods grow stronger from the number of prayers at their alters
- Gods appoints a single believer to be his priest
- Gods will bless their believers with (only) items they need
- Gods will bless their believers with health if they need it
- Priest can pray for Blessing and Cursing specific players
- Gods send their believers on quests
- Gods protect their lands around their altars.
Pleasing the Gods
As we all know, Gods are very moody entities:
- Whenever you do something which the God approve of, his mood will increase.
- Whenever you do something which the God disapprove of, his mood will decrease.
- Even when doing nothing, the Gods mood will slightly decrease. (Gods do not like being ignored)
The mood of a God has certain effects:
- Exalted Gods will give needed items, food and actively bless their believer with buffs.
- Pleased Gods will give needed items and food.
- Neutral Gods will encourage more prayers.
- Displeased Gods will complain about lack of attention.
- Angry Gods will punish their believers for lack of attention.
Any believer can check the mood of their God with the /g info command.
Item Blessings
Periodically, the God will check for his believers needs:
- When a believer has no pickaxe, the God will bless his believer with a pickaxe
- When a believer has no sword, the God will bless his believer with a sword
- When a believer is low on health, the God will bless his with health
- When a believer has no food, the God will bless his believer with food
The more powerful the God is, the more frequent the God will attend to his believers. The exact quality of the item (wood, stone, diamond) also depends on the power of the God.
Blessing Altars
A Priest can ask his God to specifically bless any player by using an altar:
- Build an altar as described above
- On the sign, write "Blessings" on line 1
- On the sign, write "on" (or anything) on line 2
- On the sign, write the name of the player on line 3
Now the priest can right-click the sign, praying to his God to bless that player!
Cursing Altars
A Priest can ask his God to specifically curse any player by using an altar:
- Build an altar as described above
- On the sign, write "Curses" on line 1
- On the sign, write "on" (or anything) on line 2
- On the sign, write the name of the player on line 3
Now the priest can right-click the sign, praying to his God to curse that player!
Commandments
Any God with respect for himself have strong opinions about what is right and wrong.
A God will periodically tell his priest about what food and creature types are considered holy and unholy.
Because the God will react swiftly with blessings and curses on his believers accordingly to these commandments,
it is the priests responsibility to communicate (preach) this information to the believers in general.
Quests
Gods will periodically issue quests for their believers, for them to show their faith in him.
This may include quest for slaying mobs, sacrificing certain items etc.
If completed, all the believers will be rewarded by the God and the quest completion will act as a mass-prayer, effectivly adding significantly more belief to the God.
Sacrifices
Believers can sacrifice items to their God by burning any item of their choice.
The God will have a certain need for certain item types and it is up to the believer to find out the needs of their God at any given time.
Sacrificing items that the God needs will result in a blessing and added belief in the God, which in turn adds more power to the God.
Be warned that sacrificing items to a God which has no interest in the item or "spam-sacrificing" a God can have deadly consequences...
Gods will also issue sacrifice quests from time to time.
The Holy Book
All Gods have their "Bible" or "Holy Book", which is maintained by the priest.
At any time, the priest can produce a copy of the current edition of the Holy Book with /gods bible.
The priest can edit a copy of the current edition of the Holy Book with /gods editbible.
He can also choose to set the currently held book to be the official Holy Book for his religion with /gods setbible.
Marriage
Players can marry another believer within their own religion.
After completing the simple wedding ceremony, the couple can "love" each other with the /g love command.
Married couples will add further to the happiness of their God, especially if their God is a God of love.
Holy Lands
The land around an altar is considered holy to that particular God.
Only believers of the God has access and can destroy within their Holy Land. This acts as a simple anti grief control purely based on building altars.
Conquering Holy Lands
- When using Holy Lands, a priest can call an attack on an enemy God's Holy Land by using the /g attack command.
- During the attack, the Holy Land is considered "contested" and no-none can build within the land.
- The contested state will last for 1 day or until either side of the attack has killed enough believers to resolve the conflict.
The God Names
By default, any player is free to believe in any obscure God name that he wishes. (Just like in real life...). To gain more control over the God names, there are 2 options:
- Use a whitelist containing the God names of the allowed Gods on the server. ONLY these Gods will be permitted on the server.
- Use a blacklist containing the God names that are disallowed on the server. Any other God name than these will be permitted on the server.
Check out the whitelist & blacklist page for the details on how to setup these lists.
See config settings below for how to enable the blacklist and whitelist.
Languages & Custom God speak
All the text for the Gods speech can be changed and customized to your needs.
You might want do adjust the tone of what a God say, expand what a God can say or even want a God to speak in another language!
All the God speech text files are found in /lang folder within the plugins folder and are by default automatically downloaded from my own server at http://www.doggycraft.dk.
(Note: To disable the download of language files, set the DownloadLanguageFile option to false in your config.yml.)
Simply use these file as templates for other languages or for adjusting the tone of voice for each God type.
Chat Formatting
Want to a players God as part of their chatname?
See here how to setup God names in the chat
Installation
Put the Gods.jar file in your /plugins folder and you are ready to go!

I seem to be having trouble with the config, using gods 0.1.7. It doesn't generate a config file when first loaded. Luckily, noone was on and I was able to restart the server, upon which it generated an empty config. adding the line "AltarBlockType: 49" and restarting the server yet again did not work.
Edit: I'm also having an issue similar to Ratbert's: whenever I create an altar, the first time it says "This is not a proper name for a God" and "bladedpenguin started to believe in Loki", then the sign breaks and /gods list reports no gods. Thereafter, when I try to make an altar of Loki, the sign breaks with no message. I am using essentials, but not essentials protect.
Is this the plugin Nations At War is gonne use on Seasen 3? (Do's anybody know if this one is it?)
@Ratbert_CP
I really appreciate that you took you time to describe this issue, so thanks for the feedback! I never thought of such an issue...
I will definitely take a look and fix this right away :)
I'm running a small server for my son and his friends, and he really wants this mod. But while we can create altars, the EssentialsProtect plugin seems to be causing problems. Whenever you right-click on an altar sign, you get an EssentialsProtect message, and what appears to be an error message from Gods:
The sign on the altar has one line. I've tried "Zeus" and "Balthor", just to see if there was something goofy there.
EDIT: Ah-ha! You actually need to end a line. I was entering the name of the God, then clicking 'Done'. Apparently, you need to enter the name of the God, hit enter, then click 'Done'. When I do that, the sign changes to 'Altar of God', and it looks like things are working.
I really like the idea of this plugin. Our server seems to like it.
But we have no idea what to do... would you kindly post an instructional video or manual on how to use it? People are making tons and tons of alters, but /gods list comes out empty. And there doesn't seem to be a config for this in the Gods folder.
@Matthiaswagg
This is fixed in 0.1.7
@dropposite
I've moved some settings around since 0.1.5, so these are now outdated (remove them from your config file if you have them, they are ignored by newer version of the plugins)
Settings:
GodPowerForLevel1Items
GodPowerForLevel2Items
GodPowerForLevel3Items
The new values are stored under Blessings:

@dropposite
1: I can make a config setting for enabling a check against player names. I am not sure if i can check against playernames for players who have not logged in on the server yet, but i will look into that.
2: That will only be possible using a blacklist that you supply. I cannot possibly hardcode all God names through human history into this plugin :P So using a blacklist, you can simply put all the names of Gods you will NOT allow into that list.
@LanToaster
Agreed :)
Tickets for Suggestions would be great. But anyway, would love to see this Plugin grow. :)
@itssnowing
exactly what im getting at. since each server could have different restrictions, a blacklist file is perfect idea and u can restrict whoever u want. and to have it automatically add new players names to the file, that would be awesome.
@dropposite
I'll just add to the second part of this- this should be togglable. It shouldn't be strict. It might be nice to have a "blacklist" of gods, because I know I would delight in worshiping Zeus, but people wouldn't like other people worshiping Satan, for instance. So. A god-name blacklist, with the option to automatically add player names to the list. (It would be impossible, to include EVERY god that has been around since the start of history.)
looking forward to this mod!! :)
Hi Again. i have two rules on my server for the Gods plugin, and was wondering if you could somehow add this into the next release.....and ill explain why.
Rule1 - You cannot use existing players names as a God.
Rule2 - You cannot use any existing 'real' god names, or god names from any history book.
The first rule keeps players actually praying to a god, rather than every player just worshiping themselves. So, Id like a way to block their ability to make a player into a god.
Second rule is very touchy and heres how Ill word it. You cannot worship a god that any other human has ever worshiped in a god-to-man way. You cant worship jesus, and you cant worship zeus....and you cant worship the sungod either.....Basically, if a group of people killed another group of people over their belief at any point in history, you cant make it a god on my server.
What we do allow is worshiping of any gods that are in a book or a game that are flatout described as fictional. This includes gods like the Meatball Monster from a childrens book, or gods from a PC game like Oryx. And of course makers of games that we declare gods like Notch and Jeb!!
What I have found is that players who worship so-called 'real' gods are no fun. Due to religious reasons, they are not allowed to 'play' with gods and some parents are making their kids log out of the server beucase they see this on the screen "Jesus is a false god, you should pray to Oryx"....By having players pray to Notch or Oryx, or some other obviously playful god, these players are now participating in the actual social conversations regarding the 'competition' of gods. Without this rule, every player was just praying to their own 'reallife' god and it was cuasing a real-life war on the server. This could be accomplished maybe with a word filter of somekind. The admin could go in and populate the ban file with the names of their choice.
plus as we all know, notch is the true god anyway :P
Ooh, I thought of another idea. Perhaps cursing? Priests could pray for a curse to befall other players. Strength of the god defines what happens, which is played against the strength of the other person's god. For instance, if I prayed for some curse to befall player X, my god chooses to do six damage (3 hearts) to that player, and their god is half as strong as mine, they take 1.5 damage, since their god can counter half of my gods strength.
Or uh.. what about themed gods? Peaceful gods who give strong blessings of health, mining supplies, but weak attack supplies etc., and bloodthirsty gods who give strong armor and weapons, but weak healing and mining supplies.
Getting a god to have both of these traits would require extra work. This could be applied to create polytheistic groups, who worship multiple gods, but in turn have to pray to each one.
This could be turned towards sacrifices, actually. The war gods accept (Or maybe even require?) sacrifices of pork or beef, while the peaceful gods accept/require sugarcane, wheat, flowers, pumpkins, etc. As super sacrifices resulting in large increases in strength, war gods could be offered other players as sacrifice, and peace gods offered valuable items, such as diamond blocks. Sacrificing a player would restrict them from worshiping that god for a configurable amount of time, to prevent sacrificing within sects.
This is a really cool concept. Sadly, I don't run a server at the moment, but I'd love to watch this mod grow.
As a suggestion, perhaps priests could pray for plant growth? Weaker gods could just make a patch of grass, then they could make flowers, then small trees, (Maybe those small jungle trees?) normal sized trees, large trees, and finally the massive jungle trees. Possibly, when the prayer is used on stone brick / cobblestone, it becomes the respective mossy block.
And if you make temples, you could make it so that if a player is about to die, the god may decide to bless them by bringing them back to the temple. This might require a "master" altar, though. Which brings me to my next suggestion: in-game configurable altars. Signs might need to say something like "Alter of Notch", rather than just "Notch", so that the sign is recognized to be an altar, without a specific block type being required. Of course, the torch on top would still be required. From there, different tiers of items would change the strength of the prayer. Any prayer will work, but someone worshiping on a diamond block would give their god more strength than someone worshiping on a dirt block. Worshiping at a low-tiered temple (Master altar) would be stronger than a same-tiered temple, but not necessarily the same as a top-tier altar.
Being near the presence of a temple could also regenerate health, and not lose hunger. To stop someone just using their house as their temple, the temple could not contain used beds, active furnaces, or full chests. Any attempt to use one of these blocks in a temple would be denied. Temples could be defined in a similar method to how Multiverse defines portals, by using a tool and right / left clicking the corners. Once the area is defined, a sign is placed with the words "Temple of -god-"
Did.. That make sense? It felt like I rambled a bit.
Hi, Sorry to bug u again...Question on the config file. First, the GodPowerForLevelItems is listed in here twice. Once at the top, and once again at the bottom underneath Blessings. What is the difference between these two settings? Second, Will users get wooden tools up until the GodPwerForLevel1Items is reached? and then the Level1 items are then Stone?
For some reason, whenever I change BlessingsEnabled to true, then do /gods reload in my server console/ingame after a day it reverts to BlessingEnabled: false. Everything else I configured stays the same though...?
Just a bug report.
Still loving the plugin
@DoggyOnFire
For some reason, this aint working for my server,
could you explain clearer about how to make the altar?
i did what it says right clicks, nothing happens.
Can you update the Upcoming Features list? To include all the things you have been saying you put on the Todo list? Also, our God, Notch, will only bless one person, and keeps blessing them, unless they aren't online. Then it switches to someone else, and keeps blessing them. Also... He blesses alot. Can you add a configuration of how often people get blessed, like 1 per an hour or something? Also, I redownloaded the plugin, and it fixed the problem.
What does 'killer has God Notch' mean in the console? To be exact, it looks like this:
[Gods v0.1.6] killer has god Notch
