For updated files, please use the BattleArena2 page. It has all of our updated files, and many of the issues that exist in the latest version here have been fixed through updates.
Default Competitions (all changeable)
- Arena: Fight with what is given to you in the config. You can't bring items in or out
- Skirmish: Bring in what you want to fight with, you take out whatever you pick up
- Battlegrounds: Winner is the highest kills after 1 minute. 4 teams may compete
- Colosseum: 4 teams against each other, last man standing wins
- FFA: last player/team left standing wins
- deathmatch: 2 minute event where if you die you respawn. Highest kills wins
- tourney: Pick a match type and do a single elimination tournament of that type.

Version 3.6.3 should address both bugs, but let me know if that doesn't work out.
So the events are completely separate from the arena,skirmish,bg,col. The exception is the Tourney which you specify which match type to use.
So the answer to your question is you can't setup the skirmish type for ffa. But you can tweak the options of the ffa so that it runs similar to a large scale skirmish. If you need help with that let me know.
The easiest way to create an arena for an event is to use the command directly. /ffa create myArenaName /ffa alter myArenaName 2 <- add a second spawn /ffa alter myArenaName 3 <- add a third, etc
That way the arena myArenaName will only be used for ffa's.
For those trying this stuff for the first time, make sure you are running the bukkit server.. not the minecraft server :-)
I made the mistake of trying to get this working while running the wrong server start-up :-D
I get that, but what i do not understand is your wiki ;-) I want to setup type:arena and event: deathmatch Description was found a few comments below. ;-) I followed your instructions but there is no type arena but a type deathmatch.
How do i setup arena type with a given event? I want to setup 1 Arena type arena, event deathmatch and a second Type:skirmish, event ffa
Deathmatch and ffa are no problem, this can be done via alter type even so they are events according to your documentation, but how do i set arena and skirmish? You see me a little bit confused.
PS: i get the same error as @kahlilnc, is it because of the mixing of type and event as described above?
I see the error, its fixed now. Will put out the revised version tomorrow.
I'll put them back into creative, and if that isn't enough we can talk about another solution. Should be out tomorrow.

My config is default :( I only changed the colors of the messages.
Putting them back into creative - would be a great start to try!.
I think it may have to do with the save inventories somehow - but not sure yet - still getting used to how this works.
But yes - on most large server with creative access - there is completely separate inventories - preventing creative items from being used / droped / put in chests to stop abuse.

Yeah that invisibility bukkit bug is a real pain. I've tried double teleporting people, trying to call the method showPlayer on all players.. all to no avail. If you know of anyone that has fixed it I will implement that fix on the spot.
Wait, are you saying that after the arena the items they had in Creative mode, become normal survival items? I just figured that anyone that had creative could get whatever they wanted and it wasn't an issue. Would putting them back in creative mode after the arena fix the issue? or am I missing something
Isnt it possible to just block pvp wherever u want it blocked inside the spawn with worldguard?

[!] 1.3 has a TP glitch where a player is invisible for awhile (on occasion) anyone found a work around to this? causes rage.
[!] If a player has access to creative - join in creative with items - play arena - after teleported out - switch to survival - and your creative items are now in survival. This does not happen with Mob Arena - may want to check that inventory store.
Love the fact it uses already WG areas and there are not 50 commands to setup something that should just use WG anyway. Brilliantly done. Thank you.

That is true, they would get teleported to wherever you set it up.. then could leave.
The way I've used it, and almost everyone else, is you build an area where people can't leave. Then you protect it with Worldguard so they can't break their way out.
As I said, I will be adding world guard support.. but you would still need to have WorldGuard itself.
Ok, but that would mean without other plugins the whole world is the arena ? Players could run and fight anywhere?
Continuous events are in the works, and actually is already in secretly but I don't want to tell people how to use it until I have made sure its working properly.
Hmm... why don't you pastebin me your config, and then do /ffa list, and let me see your arenas that you have setup.
I'll also make a better error message so that it tell you exactly why it thinks one is not available.
Mainly because BattleArenas is not worldguard. I have some basic options such as you can put in the config.yml in any of the options section "blockBreakOff", but for real protections for everything that is best done with a separate plugin.
That being said, worldguard support is being added so that some of that can be taken care of automatically.
That shouldn't be happening. I bet there is an error in the console, if there is PM me with that error.
I think I might have accidentally put in a dependency on another of my plugins BattleTracker which might be the problem. I will be taking that out in the next version I release, hopefully tonight. If that is the issue, then you could put BattleTracker in, or wait just a bit.

Sounds interesting, but i do not get, why i do not have to declare arena areas, just the spawnpoints. Is the area of the arena protected by default? Are Players only able to hurt each other, use waepons chests and so on but not able to place blocks or destroy the arena itself?
Is there any way to setup automation? If not could you add it? For example, When a game ends, there is an intermission period of 60 seconds. Automatically, players are placed into the next arena in a cycle of arenas. All players on the server are forced into the game. When that game is up, the process repeats, but with a new arena.

Only bad thing about that is my arenas are above spawn :( And factions has a sloppy way of making regions. (Chunks)
Thanks for the explanation! So basically i could create custom events/match types too. Also u forgot colliseum, how does that work sorta?
BTW, Maybe u should copy the things u just posted into your main thread. So other people also could get an idea on how the match types works(if they dont checkup on comments). The information is really handy! haha.
