BukkitDev is the missing link in the project management chain prevalent in the Minecraft community. The popular solution of making use of forum software - something designed specifically for single-threaded discussion - leaves developers painfully scavenging through threads made up of hundreds of pages simply to get to that one bug report you finally addressed. It is all very tedious and time-consuming; time lost that could be better spent doing what you love - bringing to life those mad, awesome ideas you have running around in your head. With BukkitDev, each project has their own mini-community and tools that developers are free to moderate and make use of; per-project issue trackers and forums are just a few of the advantages BukkitDev has over using a traditional forum based solution.
As detailed below, BukkitDev provides you with a complete project management solution that makes maintaining and updating your project a breeze. While many of the things BukkitDev has to offer were what we planned Fill to eventually be, there is no way we would be able to achieve the level of maturity and polish that BukkitDev currently has without the support and backing we now have from Curse. Moving forward, with the support of Curse, we are able to provide the community with some much-needed resources and support that we simply could not do alone. Thanks to Curse's support, we can now confidently provide stable, long lasting download hosting to every project within the community and since this takes advantage of the extensive and powerful Curse.com distribution platform, the reach and exposure your projects have will increase significantly.

Other improvements over our current implementation for plugin releases:
- Multiple authors per project with permissions handling (for example, you can have a Project Manager, Project Owner, Documenter, Translator, etc).
- Per-project subscriptions so people interested in your project can follow its progress.
- Curse provided hosting for your downloads
- Extra exposure through Curse.com, a high traffic content hub for Minecraft, as well as other games.

I totally agree! It wants to be a formal plugin development tool, however it just has so many flaws that just ruin the fun in trying to configure a bukkit server! The old browser was perfect, because it had short descriptions of every plugin on a single page. You could scan the text quickly to find out what there was. Now in the plugin list, there is broken formatting and long lines of text that only partially describe plugins... Also, icons are used where they are not needed, such as for categories (the only one that makes sense is redstone for mechanics) and especially for individual plugins. Because of this, people will look for a good icon rather than at a useful description (that doesn't exist!).
@Gamerguy14
I agree! I can't find shit on this site! I basically have to KNOW which plugin I am looking for! No longer can I EASILY browse them as I could on the original bukkit site. This sucks...
The pages themselves are nice, but FINDING them, is near impossible for me. Browse through 10 or so at a time, when on bukkit.org I could browse like 50 at a time? BOO
@LimeByte
I've been told the icon situtation is being worked on. Our MV page looks bad too :/
i cant seem to find where to post this so ill do it here=/ ive got a suggestion for the Bukkit Dev server mods forum - Would it be possible to add craftbukkit build# to the title of mods again? it's kinda aggravating reading about a plugin then only to find its latest release is only supported by CB#1060 perhaps making it easier to navigate to the correct area this should have been posted in would also be a good thing :)
This system is in "Alpha" in my opinion.
I liked the old forum pages instead of this.... this is hard to use.
This is a terrible idea. There was nothing wrong with the old system and bukkitdev is just making everything harder for everyone.
@fernferret
Theres a problem with this, If you want an icon but also want a banner then it looks bad having both. Can someone make it so you can choose if it is displayed on the main page or not. Thanks.
It would be nice to have the ability to favorite plugins, instead of subscribing and knowing about every comment....
@jacob_813
You simply use the image upload function, and check the box "Default Image" Like so:
where do i ask to be able to have a picture icon next to my plugin?
@ab47203
As I said below, we (the devs) should be doing the same thing we always have, putting it in our topic (category is no longer needed as we actually have categories now) I'm sure a "compatible with CB" field will crop up in the near future!
@phaed420
The same way we always have for the time being: Name v1.0 [CB1060]
In your project title. I imagine this will change with site maturity though, and unfortunately at the current time only one person can change the title (just like the forums), the user with the "Manager" Role.
@Oxguy3
The first part of what you said is spot on, but let's remember that you are correct about the community being about the code and not the money. The bukkit team has expressed that this improvement is really for us, the plugin devs, and admins, not about the almighty dollar.
I feel that this also gives seperation of projects, and an easy way to find out which ones are active and not (currently moderators must mark projects as inactive). The seperation of projects is nice, Other than latest updated, there's really no way for someone's mod to be always at the top of the list (like with the forum model) and the new search is awesome.
@erickingsr
Unfortuantely the Curse site policy requires each file to be approved. My plugins were approved within a few hours of each file, which honestly is a pretty good approval time, if you think about the number of projects. As a side note, The curse site has been live for some time now, but it does take a little bit of work to migrate your forum post to the new much better markdown style system. Simply post a comment asking the developer if they have uploaded their file, and that you understand if it's still in moderation queue.
I'm sure some developers would still like to use their own build system, which is cool and all (we use one for MV2) but having the files in a centralized location is amazing for everyone. If a user comes to me and says "hey can you support econX" I no longer have to ask for a link or scour the forums, it's just a simple search away. Now I understand that not all projects have made it to bukkitdev, but honstly, if there's not at least a project page, and the dev is not away on a vacation, then it may be time to start looking for a new plugin...
Just as a reference point (i'll use a plugin that has a userbase of like 7 people as to not offend or introduce a place for links, this is really not it, mods feel free to remove) http://dev.bukkit.org/server-mods/wolfpound/
Note the right area, there is a section called Recent File(s) This will show all the latest for that specific plugin. Note the R next to the file, this means it's a release file. There are 2 other types available to developers, alpha and beta which should be treated as such when using them on your production server.
Hmm that post got a lot longer than I thought... sorry.
Looking very good!!! :D
IMHO this is bad idea
I like the idea of internalizing file storage to make downloads easier, but I am not a huge fan of the Curse network. They aren't going to impose advertisements or other major changes, are they? I can't bear to go on Minecraft Wiki unless I have Stylish removing the ad sidebar.
It's great that Bukkit will have more resources, but we must remember not to sell out. In my mind, Bukkit stands as one of the best examples of a healthy open source community: no ad banners, no adf.ly links, no profit being made except via donate links. I'd hate to see that great image fall.
Thank you for making me go to a third party website to download plugins. There's no 'download' button for the majority of the plugins listed on bukkit.org now....
Am I missing something?
its already proving troublesome...if you aren't updated to the VERY latest build of craftbukkit there is no way to see what version the mods are on and no way to download past versions so you're pretty much screwed
This is rather fantastic!
Love the page layout and the per-project forums and pages. This is going to make utilizing the vast amount of information here a little easier.
Also, being able to switch the Markup Type of the post is great!
Well done.
How do we know which craftbukkit version these projects support?
