Many people have very specific likes, and some people (like those with eye problems) have very specific needs. I think it's important to try to give a way for everyone to be able to use the site.
There are some very hard realities. We're not the greatest designers. At times we can bust our asses for days and be lucky to have something the won't make you run in terror. We're also under a very heavy workload and have a lot going on, and there is only two of us. So please keep in mind that the new design isn't really the target end point it's a stopping point into perfecting the main designs.
Approximately 25% of the users have voted a dislike for the new theme, with only about 17% showing a strong dislike. That's understandable.
For these reasons we've brought a theming system into the mix. It's currently not possible to replicate the old theme 100%, but it does give you a lot of control over the look of the website. The corners, the paddings, the fonts, and the colors, and more. We're also open to working with people to get more power added to the theming system so that their needs and wants can be met.
I'm hoping that as time goes by we'll be able to see an amazing set of templates that will provide to the needs of all of the users.
So I apologize to the people who are hating the new theme and want something different, or just the old one. However, I do thank you for all of the feedback and the honesty with us. Please keep it coming.
A few links people may find useful:
what would be nice if it where to tell us our "current" theme
@watchout, no at this time there is not.
@hunterz, heh, fair enough, we do plan on linking to the themes page on the site soon. This is currently not done since it's still considered a feature in testing.
Can you guys work in some kind of permanent link to the themes page?
One of the frustrating things about the new WowAce/Curse site is that I keep getting pointed to hidden features via deep links in announcements, comments or forum posts that you can't get to without knowing the URL.
I havnt had a chance to look over the new layout, but right now, im giving yall 2 thumbs way up, amazing look guys.
Is there a way to disable the expanding/collapsing animation?
@acapela, to view projects per game, go to that games subdomain.
For example, wow.curseforge.com/projects/ is only wow projects.
i am not so concerned about the "layout". in a way, that seems to miss the forest for the trees.
how about some way to filter projects/etc by game?
rather difficult to track what might be new in "World of Warcraft Addons" when everything is jumbled together indiscriminately.
maybe i am missing something? maybe this feature already exists in some form, and is in fact documented somewhere, and it is just not possible to find that documentation? should i search the "knowledge base"?
@bsides, Thanks for the understanding. There is still a lot more that we want to do, and it will all happen, sooner or later.
So please keep the constructive feedback on the layouts coming. :)
I didn't know it was just the 2 of you. Judging by the size of this site and community, sure you'd be better with more people in your team. And a designer who codes would be the best of the worlds in my conception.
Good work on having the theming mix by the way. It looks promising. If I get a break from work I'll see it more deeply and maybe get my hands dirty :)
@Bitwise: yeah it's very odd, we're going to work out something where it doesn't cause this issue. Thanks for working with us to figure it out :)
Kaeltan: Indeed, i'm using Firefox 3 on Windows XP Professional. It only happens when you scroll down, not up.
I can also confirm that it's the rounded borders, if I use Firebug to remove them from .comment in the CSS the pages move nice and smooth. It's actually quite odd, I see the moz- properties utilized all the time but it's never like this.
The new look is fine, but is there a way to set the "Visited Link" color to something else? I rely on that to figure out which addons I'm keeping an eye on, and having the Header link colors the same for both unvisited and visited links messes things up ...
Nevermind ... figured out how to do it :-)
Also, when previewing a comment, there's no obvious way to get back to the original comment to actually post it ... (yes, I did figure it out, but it took a little experimenting).
Hey all, I recently changed where personal theme preferences are stored, so everyone's preferences got reset. This should fix some issues with people losing their theme between reloads and all that, though.
@allara: check out the individual themes page, it gives you a preview and lets you set it there.
@bitwise, I made a post in another spot, but the scrolling seems to be related to rounded corners on ff3 in XP, can you confirm that you're using that setup?
And yeah, we noticed the %(num)d comments occasionally as well and will be fixing it.
Comments are broken or something. Someone mentioned it on the previous announcement, but i'd just like to confirm: pages with a lot of comments are slowed down for scrolling, extremely annoying.
In addition, the front page is showing "%(num)d comments" for me. Might want to look into that.
How do we easily navigate to the theme list from the main wowace.com page once this announcement gets replaced by another?
I hate to have missed the obvious, but how in the blue hell do you change your current theme? :P
@vorvonox, if you can give some examples, I'd be happy to see what we can do to improve things.
It's just not the colors and what not, it's the actual layout; things are just worse to navigate now, and a theme won't help that.
