Glad I could contribute. And I agree about the points per rounds. WIth what you said about the same teams every time; I have a solution for that. You could have it that the config file has a certain setting, where after X rounds the teams become slightly more randomised, but maybe still trying to keep them roughly fair, just a bit more randomised.
Thank you so much, Harbringer, for the awesome signatures!!!
My MC username is GreatMar2. I have a server at greatcraft.no-ip.biz, though it is not up 24/7. PM me if it is down and you want it up. MC server list link
Hm, nice idea. I will have to think about the potential flaws of this a bit more though.
For example, if a player has WAY more points than all the others, he will play alone every time, potentially resulting in short, non-fun rounds, until (yes I understood that) the other players catch up.
An other issue I see, are the players not understanding how it generates the team and keeping complaining about team making (yes, this can be an issue for the moderators/admins).
So I could think of this as an option, and maybe combined with an other setting, for example using this system to sort the players depending on their points, but still making sure that in the end the team sizes don't differ WAY to much (maximum 3 players difference or something like that) by moving the players with the lowest number of points to the other team until the size differences are low enough.
And an other thing is, that the points don't really reflect the skill of a player, because they depend very much on the time/rounds being played. So maybe it would be better to sort them depending on a quotient like (points / rounds) or something like that.
Thanks for your input!
I agree with Iwitrag.
Though I often have only random on (and I sometimes turn it off to go me vs 2 or 3 of my friends), I have designed the majority of my 14 paintball maps around two teams. Now, I could reconfigure some of them to make do with multiple teams, but then a minimum of half would be mostly useless.
But this is not what I came here to suggest. I am ok with the friends making teams, but I have a suggestion that could make the teams even more fair, than just players going with their friends. You keep the red and blue teams, whoever is in the random team get put into the team that most needs points. You know the points you earn for each win, match, hit and kill and loose for team attack? The ones that are used to give each player a rank? If a server was on random only, it would try balance the two teams so that their total scores are as close as can be. For example, if there is one player with 3, another with 2 and another with 1, it would make the one team with the first and the latter two in the second team, instead of what it currently does, putting a random two in red and a random one in blue. When one of them gets more points, whever did the best wil be upgraded into the solo team.
If it was a person with 10 points, then two with 1 point, they would still stand more of a chance. When they manage to get their points up, on could overtake the 10-pointer. For example, I'm the top ranked on my own server, reasonably closely followed by another friend. When I play with him and some others, it would make much more sense to be me vs him and the others on the server than me and him together vs someone else.
I see this as a much more efficient way of getting balanced teams, making sure that both team have roughly the same amount of skill.
If you are wondering about a brand-new player who is epicly-skilled from the beginnning, he'll rise up the ranks quickly if he is that skilled.
What I like to do on my server is give each player 5 hits and 2 respawns. I also made the chance of a gift at 100% with 30% chance for another gift or 10% each for 7 various weapons. I initially did this because I had shop disabled, but now I am going to keep it even with shop enabled. This give ample opportunity for new players to rise up the ranks, if they know how to what they got (some don't seem to read the tutorial I put up in the lobby).
There are join signs. Though this is about ideas on the team selection. For other, unrelated suggestion please leave a comment on the ideas page instead.
Make join sign please!:)
This might not be a problem with only a few players. However, with larger teams the differences can easily become to big to have a fun gameplay.
I have nothing against 2 or 3 player differences in team sizes and I could think of adding a option for the auto-team correction to allow certain differences.
But team differences above easily becomes unfair and this reduces the fun a lot. So having something to automatically fix that (if the players can't produce fair teams themselves) would be nice then.
I will not remove the team option for now, but will add some auto team correction settings in the future. This way disabling the "Only random" option becomes more attractive again.
Well personally I don't have that option enabled, because some players are better than others and they want for example play alone 1 vs 3... so 3 players write /pb red and remaining one /pb random.. and if new player joins he will be automatically in blue team. :)
Most servers I know have "Only random" set to true anyway (to make sure that the teams are always fair), and players only use "/pb join" to play.
I guess I will keep the team selection for now, but change how the random option works (not as seperate group) and add some settings to auto-correct the team after a certain while.
I don't think that removing that option is good choice... players on my (not only my) server are used to playing paintball with blue/red teams...
Better idea is - just add in config option like
And that will activate the /pb team <player> feature... But admins will be able to activate it to old redblue teams.
This section here is only about the idea of removing team selection.
